What is Juvéderm®?

Juvéderm® is a line of injectable hyaluronic acid dermal fillers that can be used to help fill out lost volume and sunken skin. There are different types of Juvéderm® fillers that target specific areas of the face and help to fill unsightly indentions in the skin, such as wrinkles, fine lines, and even some acne scars. These fillers act as a binder for much-needed moisture in the skin and help stimulate the body’s natural production of collagen.

Collagen is a protein that provides skin with structural support and elasticity, while hyaluronic acid acts as a sponge, binding water to hydrate skin, giving it volume. As we age, however, both substances slowly begin to dissipate, allowing for the formation of lines and wrinkles, especially around the nose and mouth.

In addition, loss of facial volume can give a hollow, shadowed appearance to the cheek areas. Time, sun exposure, and other environmental factors can contribute to a loss of collagen and hyaluronic acid, which can be treated with injectable fillers.

Juvéderm® VOLUMA XC

The aging process is certainly 3-dimensional. Over the years we tend to lose fat in our face, especially in the cheeks. Dr. Eliopoulos also sees this midface volume loss in her patients who are avid exercisers with lean body mass. This volume loss and flattening of the cheek area can give us a more tired, drawn, aged appearance due to the shadowing effect and by contributing to skin excess at the nasolabial folds (lines running from the corner of the nose to the corner of the mouth) and below the eye area. Patients often say that they feel like their face and skin looks “saggier”.

Considering cheek augmentation can be a very effective first step to rejuvenate the face and restore a more youthful, natural contour. Cheek augmentation tends to lessen the amount of excess skin in the nasolabial region by augmenting the underlying bony structure and providing a “lifting” effect. Commonly, as a result, the nasolabial folds are softened and less volume of filler may be needed to provide full correction in the nasolabial fold if that is desired as well.

Juvéderm® Voluma XC is the first FDA-approved filler to correct age-related volume loss in the midface. With Voluma, Dr. Eliopoulos and her highly trained nurse injectors can create a smoother contour and a more youthful appearance. Voluma is a hyaluronic acid filler that was created using special technology that contributes to its lift capacity and duration. Voluma has a smooth consistency that allows for a very smooth, natural-looking lift to the midface. In studies, results have lasted up to 18 months when optimal treatments were performed. The treatment is very tolerable because the product comes mixed with numbing medicine and you can see the results immediately!

Juvéderm® VOLBELLA

Do you have very fine, very superficial wrinkles or creases in the skin that are bothersome to you? Maybe you have some of those pesky vertical lip lines or lines in the lower cheek and around the mouth for example or some wrinkling of the pink of your lips.

Here at the Center for Plastic Surgery in Chelmsford, we have a great way to target these lines very effectively. Juvéderm® Volbella is an FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler that has some unique properties which allow Dr. Eliopoulos to more effectively target these superficial lines. This dermal filler is a soft, cohesive gel that quickly integrates into the skin and can be used to treat a wide range of facial wrinkles.

Unlike other injectable fillers and some of our more volumizing injectable fillers like Juvederm Ultra or Ultra Plus, Volbella is used more as a “fine line” filler rather than a “true volumizer”.

Dr. Eliopoulos often uses the following analogy:

If you were going to repair a “dent in a car” you might use Juvederm. But if you then wanted to “fix the scratches” in the paint, you would use Volbella.

How soon will I see results?

Despite being a lunch-time treatment, the results of a Juvéderm® filler are usually not visible right away. The active ingredient is Hyaluronic acid, which needs to bind to the molecules within the skin so collagen can develop. After your initial treatment, there may be some slight redness, inflammation, or bruising at the injection site. After this subsides, you will start to see the first signs of results. Over the next two weeks, you will see the area fill out as the full results settle in.

How Long Do Juvéderm® Results Last?

The results of a Juvéderm® procedure will vary, but most patients can expect them to last up to 18 months with proper skincare and maintenance. Typically, follow-up appointments are scheduled at about 12 months after the initial treatment to help maintain the results. This will also depend on the type of Juvéderm® injectable you receive and factors such as exposure to extreme temperatures and natural side effects of aging.

Who is a Good Candidate for Juvéderm® Products?

Juvéderm® is an excellent treatment option for patients who simply wish to refresh, rejuvenate, and fill out common signs of aging in the skin. Our main line of dermal fillers, Juvéderm®, is available to patients 21 years of age and older who are seeking to fill out their face either to replenish lost volume, fill out wrinkles, or simply enhance a naturally slim facial profile.
