The SmartLipo Procedure
Because traditional liposuction continues to be one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures nationwide, it is not surprising that advanced micro laser body sculpting has created quite a stir. Also known as Laser-Assisted Lipolysis, this revolutionary advancement in liposuction technology allows permanent removal of unwanted fat in a safe and gentle way.
SmartLipo, the forerunner of laser-assisted lipolysis, was specifically designed to destroy fat cells and coagulate tissue, and can also be used to achieve skin tightening unlike traditional liposuction. SmartLipo is great for treating small to moderate areas of localized fat and is performed right in the plastic surgeon's office safely and effectively without the need for general anesthesia. This allows patients to recover with typically less downtime.

"Ever since I can remember I had large protruding saddlebags. I always had trouble with skirts, dresses, pants and especially bathing suits. No amount of weight loss ever made them go away and it made me horribly self conscious all the time. The Smartlipo procedure I had done was truly life changing and the staff and Dr. Eliopoulos are nothing short of miracle workers. I feel like a new person and other than the birth of my children have never been happier. Thank you, thank you, thank you." THF, Age: 41, Bartender, Methuen

SmartLipo by Cynosure became the first FDA approved laser system for laser lipolysis in November 2006, but was used worldwide for 8 years prior. Because the Center for Plastic Surgery believes in providing only the very best treatments for our patients, it was only natural for us to choose SmartLipo because of its history as the leader in the laser lipolysis industry.
SmartLipo allows the physician to use the 1064 nm and the 1320 nm wavelengths individually and sequentially in a “blended fashion,”employing MultiPlex (MPX) technology for optimal results and safety. Each of these wavelengths brings unique characteristics to the laser lipolysis procedure. One is better suited for liquefying fat and coagulating tissue and blood vessels, while the other is more aggressive and suited for tightening the skin. By “blending” these wavelengths with the MPX system, you can benefit from both wavelengths more effectively than with either wavelength alone. Multiplexing the two wavelengths provides more even, uniform delivery of laser energy to maximize the effectiveness and safety of the treatment while decreasing the time of the treatment, allowing larger areas to be treated, helping induce skin tightening, and optimizing overall patient outcomes and satisfaction. Also, we use the SmartSense handpiece, an intelligent delivery system that regulates the laser output from SmartLipoMPX, along with Advanced Thermaguide Technology to enhance the safety and uniformity of energy delivery. This provides added protection against burning the skin along with superior aesthetic outcomes.
Who Is a Candidate for SmartLipo?
Ideal patients are in good health, close to normal body weight, with areas of fat that will not respond to diet and exercise. SmartLipo is best suited for small to moderate areas of fat in the neck, arms, abdomen, inner and outer thighs (saddle bags), “love handles,” knees, back, “bra” fat, and male breast tissue. SmartLipo is useful in areas that may have looser skin, or for more fibrous areas of fat such as back, breast (male gynecomastia), or even areas previously treated with liposuction.
The SmartLipo Procedure
Because laser assisted lipolysis is a minimally invasive procedure, when performing SmartLipo Chelmsford plastic surgeon, Dr. Eliopoulos is able to deliver it in her office instead of a hospital. Instead of requiring a general anesthetic, the areas to be treated are numbed with local tumescent anesthesia (numbing fluid), so the patient is awake and comfortable. There is typically very little pain or discomfort involved. Some patients feel minor stinging and the sensation of tugging at the skin during the procedure, but these discomforts are minimal.
After making a tiny 1-2 mm nick in the skin, the laser is inserted through a 1 mm cannula into the fat pockets. The cannula, with the tip of the laser fiber exposed approximately 2mm, is then moved in a “back and forth” fanning motion. As the fiber tip comes into contact with the fat, fat cells are destroyed. The laser also coagulates the tissue and blood vessels, resulting in less bleeding and less bruising. The laser has also been shown to promote tissue tightening through this bulk thermal heating and tissue coagulation. The liquefied fat is then aspirated using traditional liposuction to contour and sculpt the area, but with small caliber cannulas. The body will also absorb any remaining destroyed fat cells during the healing process. The procedure takes about 1-3 hours depending on the areas treated. Immediately after your procedure, you will be able to walk out and perform light activities.
Recovering from SmartLipo
Unlike the prolonged recovery and possible overnight stay required when traditional liposuction is performed, there is minimal downtime with laser-assisted lipolysis. SmartLipo MPX completely eliminates the need for post-anesthesia recovery and patients typically find the post procedural pain to be minimal.
Immediately after your SmartLipo procedure, you will be able to walk out and perform light activities. Most patients are able to return to normal office work in 1 to 2 days, although exercise will be limited for about 2-3 weeks depending on the areas treated. The extent of swelling and bruising varies; for some patients it is minimal, and for others it lasts about a week. A compression garment will need to be worn for several days or weeks after the treatment, depending upon the body parts treated. Results can be seen within the first few weeks, and will continue to improve over 3 to 6 months.
