Long-Lasting Freedom from Waxing and Shaving

You may be surprised to learn that almost your entire body is covered with hair. Because most of this hair is fine and pale, it usually isn’t visible to the naked eye. But whether you’re a man or a woman, darker, coarser hair can appear in unwanted places. And when it does, laser hair removal offers a better, longer-lasting solution than shaving, depilatories, and waxing – laser hair removal.

Patients looking for the best laser hair removal Boston has to offer, can find it at the Center for Plastic Surgery with our LightSheer Diode Laser Hair Removal.

Areas We Can Treat

  • Face
  • Chest
  • Abdomen
  • Back
  • Bikini area
  • Shoulders
  • Neck
  • Underarms
  • Legs
  • …and more!

Men are often bothered by excess hair on the back, shoulders, chest, or ears. Or, they may experience a condition called “pseudofolliculitis barbae,” a chronic inflammatory condition in hair-bearing areas such as the beard of the face. Women can certainly enjoy the benefits of laser hair removal as well, eliminating unwanted hair in areas like the face, neck, abdomen, back, breast, arms, underarms, legs and bikini area.

The only areas not recommended for laser hair removal are the eyelids and surrounding area due to the risk of injury and skin with tattoos because of the pigment already in the skin.

In the past, the usual remedies for unwanted hair were plucking, shaving, waxing, or chemical depilatories. Some are painful, some are messy, and all are only temporary. While electrolysis can be effective, it can be slow and uncomfortable. LightSheer Diode Laser Hair Removal offers the most effective solution, specifically designed to remove unwanted hair faster, with less discomfort, and more reliably than all these other methods.

Here’s how LightSheer is different:

LightSheer laser hair removal utilizes a remarkable innovation in diode laser technology to efficiently and completely remove unwanted hair from most skin types. This non-invasive, gentle technique eliminates undesirable hair from all parts of the body.

Hair removal is a part of everyday life for many people. The options aren’t pleasant to choose from: whether you go for waxing, shaving, hair removal cream, or electrolysis, the options can be time consuming, excruciating, untidy, and also inefficient. LightSheer laser hair removal is different: it utilizes a remarkable innovation in diode laser technology to completely remove unwanted hair, pleasantly and successfully.

Lumenis has spent over half a century pioneering laser hair removal, so you know you're obtaining the highest degree of excellence with this treatment. Only LightSheer employs two powerful, unique technologies:

  • High Speed Vacuum Assisted technology for sizable treatment areas, requiring no preparation and also no gel. The handpiece makes use of mild suction to raise and extend the skin, allowing the laser to be absorbed right into the follicles much more quickly when treating a large area. This means your therapy time will be shorter, and it also helps to reduce the sensation of warmth.
  • ChillTip™ technology, a cooled sapphire tip for smaller, more delicate locations. The special sapphire cooling system constantly numbs the skin and also cools it to ensure that the experience will be comfortable. At the same time, the handpiece presses the skin to make sure that the laser’s power is absorbed well by the hair roots.

How Do Lasers Remove Hair?

Hair grows from the root, which is surrounded by the follicle under the skin. This is the only part of the hair that is alive. The rest of the hair is made up of dead protein cells.

The light emitted by the laser is absorbed by the pigment located in the hair follicles. The laser pulses for a fraction of a second, just long enough to vaporize the pigment, disabling multiple follicles at a time to eliminate or significantly impede the hair's regrowth.

The patented Chill Tip handpiece actively cools before, during, and after treatment to minimize discomfort, and enables the use of higher treatment frequencies.

Laser Hair Removal: What You Can Expect

You'll need to wear special goggles to protect your eyes from the laser beam for each treatment. Before the treatment begins, an assistant will shave the site and apply local anesthetic as needed.

The doctor presses a hand-held laser device against the skin in the treatment area. When activated, the device sends a laser beam through your skin to the hair follicles. The intense energy of the laser beam damages the hair follicles, which inhibits hair growth, while the surrounding tissue remains unaffected and unharmed.

The ChillTip cooling device on the instrument's tip helps protect your skin and reduce the risk of side effects. You might feel a sensation similar to a warm pinprick and a sensation of cold from the cooling device.

A LightSheer laser hair removal session can take anywhere from a few minutes to more than an hour, depending on the size of the treatment area.

Is Laser Hair Removal Painful?

Some patients describe it as feeling a bit like a mild snap of a rubber band, and some say they feel a slight tingling sensation after the treatment. While most people tolerate laser hair removal very well, some people and some areas of the body are more sensitive than others. A topical anesthetic is typically all that is needed to ease or prevent any discomfort.

Laser Hair Removal: Recovery and Results

The appearance of the treated area immediately after a laser session will vary depending on the extent of the treatment and the skin type. Immediate after-effects, if any, are minor. They may include redness and swelling. This will disappear after a short time, but you can apply ice to help things along. Most people are able to return to normal activities right away.

You may shed more hair from the treated area in the following weeks, and you will certainly see less hair development as you progress through the course of your treatments.

We recommend using a gentle cleanser and lotion on treated areas, avoiding sun exposure and tanning beds for six weeks, and using broad-spectrum SPF30 sunscreen daily.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Hair follicles properly destroyed with laser hair removal won't allow hair to grow again, but it can grow back in follicles that were only damaged. This means you might have some hair grow back, but it will be much less than before.

Because the laser does its best work destroying follicles when hair is in the growth stage, it may take multiple treatments before you get the full, smooth, and hairless results you’re looking for. Maintenance treatments might even be necessary, but you will see fewer noticeable follicles with each consecutive growth phase and laser treatment as they grow finer and lighter in color.

Prepare for Laser Hair Removal

Your doctor or laser technician will talk to you from consultation through the whole process and provide specific instructions and guidelines to prepare in the days and weeks leading up to your laser hair removal session and on the day of your visit. Some of these instructions will include:

Four weeks before treatment:

Avoid plucking, waxing, epilating, or chemical depilatories. Since laser hair removal targets the root of the hair, and a root must be present for the treatment to be effective, we recommend you only shave during the course of your treatments.

Two weeks before treatment:

Avoid sun exposure and UV tanning for at least two weeks before treatment and use a broad-spectrum SPF30 sunscreen, rain, or shine.

Also, avoid sunless skin creams that may darken your skin. Your doctor might even prescribe a skin bleaching cream if you have a recent tan or darker skin.

Avoid dermal filler injections, Botox, microdermabrasion, or chemical peels in the treatment area for at least two weeks before laser hair removal.

Three days before treatment:

Avoid topicals that cause photosensitivity (such as hydroxy acids, salicylic acid, retinol, or benzoyl peroxide).

One day before treatment:

Trimming and shaving are recommended around 24 hours before laser treatment to remove hair above the skin, which can otherwise result in surface skin damage from burnt hairs.

On the day of treatment:

Arrive freshly showered or bathed, with no lotions, oils, creams, or fragrances on your skin.

Before your visit, you should also let us know if you are taking any new medications, such as aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs.

Laser Hair Removal FAQs

How many sessions does it take to remove hair with a laser?

Laser hair removal works best on hair follicles in the active growth phase. Because not all hairs will be at the same stage of development simultaneously, you may require several treatments to eliminate the undesirable hair completely.

How long you will have to wait between laser hair removal sessions will vary depending on the location of the treatment area. In areas where the hair grows more quickly, such as the upper lip, treatment might be repeated in four to eight weeks. In areas where hair grows more slowly, such as the back, the treatment might be every 12 to 16 weeks.

Is it safe to do laser hair removal?

This system was designed from the ground up for effective hair removal, providing unsurpassed safety, efficacy, reliability, and ease of use.

With proper preparation and precautions, laser hair removal is extremely safe. Side effects such as skin irritation and pigment changes are rare and usually the result of failing to avoid sun exposure before or after treatment and those who have darker skin

Is laser hair removal right for me?
