What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are a popular non-surgical solution for cosmetic enhancement and anti-aging treatments. They are versatile, nearly painless, and offer immediate results.

The skin on our face often shows the most reaction to harsh weather, UV rays, bacteria, dirt, and gravity. As we age, wrinkles, fine lines, sagging skin, and loss of volume develop in areas around the eyes, nose, cheeks, and mouth. Additionally, scarring from acne or blemishes on the face can cause uneven skin texture and tone.

The soft tissue filler found in dermal fillers (including notable brands like Juvéderm®) is injected into the skin at varying depths to help fill in facial wrinkles, provide facial volume, and augment facial features. The result is a smoother, fuller, and more youthful appearance.

Most dermal fillers are temporary, as they use ingredients that are absorbed safely by the body. For example, Juvéderm® brand fillers use hyaluronic acid (a substance produced naturally by the body) to help bind much-needed moisture to the molecule just beneath the skin.

What are the Benefits of Dermal Fillers?

There are many reasons why dermal fillers are one of the most popular non-surgical treatment options. The benefits they offer are highly rewarding and can help patients of all ages look and feel more confident. These benefits include treatments that offer:

  • No downtime
  • Fast-acting results
  • Long-lasting results
  • Natural-looking results
  • Quick, easy applications
  • Virtually painless treatments
  • Reduced side effects and risks compared to surgery
  • The ability to augment other treatments or procedures

What Types of Dermal Fillers are Available?

At the Center for Plastic Surgery in Chelmsford, we offer patients the Juvéderm® line. Our selection of products includes Juvéderm® XC, Voluma, Volbella, and Vollure, which feature the highest quality ingredients available in the Boston area.

These products are designed to target different parts of the face. For example, Juvéderm® XC is recommended for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth areas, Voluma helps with nasolabial folds and blemishes around the midface region, Vollure can help to augment the lips and smoothen wrinkles around the mouth, and Volbella, which helps to target fine lines around the face.

Who is a Good Candidate for Dermal Fillers?

Injectable fillers are an excellent treatment option for patients who do not yet require more invasive treatments, like facial plastic surgery, and are seeking rejuvenating treatment to address common signs of aging in the skin.

Ideal candidates for dermal injections are physically healthy, non-smokers, and have realistic goals for the procedure. To learn more about dermal fillers and other non-surgical facial enhancements, please contact our facility to schedule a consultation with Dr. Eliopoulos.

Dermal Fillers FAQ

Do Dermal Fillers Hurt?

One of the biggest concerns patients have when considering treatments like dermal fillers is the potential for pain or discomfort during treatment. Needles can be scary or anxiety-inducing for many, which can cause them to steer clear of treatments like dermal fillers. Thankfully, there is no reason to fear dermal injections, especially when performed by an expert medical professional.

Most patients experience a slight pricking sensation during the application, which can be alleviated through topical anesthetics or even numbing agents like cold compresses or ice. It is advised that you avoid taking any NSAIDs like aspirin or ibuprofen for around 5 days before treatment, as this can increase your risk of bruising and bleeding during application.

How Soon Will I See Results?

Dermal fillers can deliver incredible results, with patients starting to see an improvement in their skin immediately after their first appointment. The full effects will take around 7-10 days to settle, as inflammation subsides and the natural HA proteins start to bind to the molecules in the skin.

Since many dermal fillers work to boost the natural collagen production in the targeted areas, patients will see the results gradually improve over time. Results can last anywhere from six months to two years depending on the product and the aftercare.
