If you want to look your best and your youngest, it's important that you take good care of yourself. That means eating right, protecting your skin from the sun, staying hydrated, and exercising regularly. Of course, even that won't be able to entirely avoid wrinkles or sagging skin. That's why many people visit our Chelmsford plastic surgery center. Just one surgery can make all the difference. In fact, just undergoing a neck lift can make you look so much younger. We'd like to go over the basics of neck lift surgery right now.

About Neck Lift Surgery

A neck lift surgery is a procedure performed by a plastic surgeon that reduces the amount of loose skin along the neckline and underside of the face. This is not to be confused with a chin augmentation, which alters the size and shape of a person's chin.

Best Candidates for Neck Lift Surgery

Ideal candidates for neck lift surgery are men and women who have drooping or sagging skin along the neckline as a result of advanced age or major weight loss. These candidates for surgery should be in good general health and have realistic expectations about what the neck lift surgery can achieve.

Neck Lift Surgery vs. Traditional Facelift Surgery

While both the neck lift and the Chelmsford facelift are facial rejuvenation procedures, they are different surgeries targeting specific areas of the face. The facelift will target the middle portion of the face rather than the neckline. There is a lower facelift that can prove helpful, however. This procedure will reduce the appearance of jowls and sagging of the cheeks. When you visit the practice for a consultation, we will be sure to assess your needs and perform the surgery that best meets them.

The Neck Lift Surgery Procedure

During a neck lift, patients are placed under general anesthesia to avoid undue discomfort. Incisions are made behind the lower portion of the ears and just underneath the chin. Through these incisions, excess skin is removed and liposuction may also be performed in order to remove pockets of unwanted fat. Once the contouring has been completed, the skin is pulled tight and sutured in place.

Recovering from Neck Lift Surgery

In the first day or so after neck lift surgery, soreness, swelling, and discomfort are all common. Patients will be asked to get a lot of rest and stay well hydrated in this early phase of recovery. In addition, patients are asked to avoid any strenuous physical activity since that can put pressure and strain on the incision sites. This is especially true of heavy lifting.

Patients will visit our practice again for a follow-up within the first week after the neck lift. Any troubling problems that a patient experiences during the entire recovery process should be reported to us immediately so that we can address the matter as soon as possible.
