A Slim, Sculpted Stomach Is Possible with Abdominal Liposuction

A woman's flat, sculpted abdomen after liposuction

The abdomen is one of the toughest areas of the body to tone and sculpt with diet and exercise alone. Even with a good exercise routine and a healthy diet, many men and women find they are unable to get a flat, taut tummy. If stubborn stomach fat is keeping you from feeling confident and attractive, abdominal liposuction may be right for you. Liposuction is highly effective at eliminating unwanted pockets of fat from stubborn areas of the body, like the abdomen, thighs, and upper arms, helping men and women enjoy a contoured, streamlined appearance. To find out if you're a candidate for abdominal liposuction, schedule a consultation at the Center for Plastic Surgery with Dina A. Eliopoulos.

The Abdominal Liposuction Procedure

Whether liposuction is performed on the abdomen, arms, back, thighs, or neck, patients will undergo anesthesia for their comfort. When performed on the abdomen, one or more small incisions are placed within the targeted areas of the stomach. A long tube, called a cannula, is inserted through the incision. The cannula is attached to a suction device and once initiated, unwanted fat is suctioned from the body.

Recovery after Abdominal Liposuction

The length of time needed for recovery after abdominal liposuction will vary based on the amount of fat removed as well as the size of the treated area. Many people are recovered enough to return to work within a few days to a week, with limited activity for the first few weeks after surgery.

After liposuction, patients may experience some soreness, bruising, and swelling. Swelling may persist for four to twelve weeks, gradually lessening over time. As swelling decreases and the tissues adjust to their new contours, it can take a few months for the full results of liposuction to take effect.

Candidates for Abdominal Liposuction

Abdominal liposuction can create a beautifully streamlined physique in both men and women. Candidates for abdominal liposuction should be near their ideal weight, as liposuction is not a means to achieve drastic weight loss. Candidates should also be healthy enough to undergo surgery and identify with one or more of the following:

  • Difficulty getting rid of stubborn abdominal fat: Those who are unable to get rid of stubborn belly fat, despite a healthy diet and regular exercise, often make excellent candidates for abdominal liposuction.
  • Have given birth or had a cesarean: Pregnancy and cesarean sections can create a fatty pocket within the lower abdomen. For many women, this post-baby pouch is virtually impossible to get rid of with crunches and diet alone. Abdominal liposuction can help smooth the lower abdomen and restore a slim, pre-baby stomach.
  • Over 18: Like with most plastic surgery treatments, it is recommended that liposuction patients be 18 years of age or older. Liposuction is suitable for adults who are healthy enough for surgery.
