The Risks and Benefits of SmartLipo Treatment

Many people want to look their absolute best, which means exercise, a healthy diet, and taking good care of your skin. Of course, there's always an issue with that last bit of fat or flab. You can do crunches, lunges, squats, and all the exercises that you want in that area, but the fat may not go away. You are not alone in this problem. The fact is that spot reduction of fat is a myth and the only way to get rid of that flab is liposuction.

The team at our plastic surgery center would like to take this opportunity to look at one great leap forward in liposuction treatment. This is known as SmartLipo.

About Traditional Liposuction

During a traditional liposuction procedure, a thin metal tube called a cannula is inserted into the treatment area. Using careful suction, the fat in the part of the body is carefully extracted. There are variations on traditional liposuction surgery (and SmartLipo is just one such variation), but this general principle holds true.

What makes SmartLipo different?

SmartLipo (also known as laser liposuction) uses a special cannula in order to remove fat from the body. This cannula emits laser energy at the tip of the cannula, wheres as a normal cannula has no such laser equipped.

What the Laser Cannula Can Do

The laser cannula is able to do two things:

  • The laser targets the fat cells in the treatment area, liquefying them and making them easier to remove
  • The heat generated by the laser cannula safely stimulates the production of collagen, which generally leads to smoother, firmer skin in the treatment area and better results overall than traditional liposuction

Benefits of SmartLipo

In addition to the above benefits of SmartLipo regarding fat removal and skin tightening, our cosmetic plastic surgeon often notes a number of improvements regarding patient healing after the surgery is completed.

That means the benefits of SmartLipo are as follows:

  • Greater ease in surgically removing fat
  • Promotion of collagen growth to tighten skin
  • Smoother skin in the treatment area after healing
  • Reduced patient discomfort
  • Reduced recovery time and downtime
  • Reduced bruising and swelling
  • Risks of SmartLipo

In general, the risks of liposuction are the same as the risks associated with any other sort of surgery, such as infection, blood clots, and poor healing experience. Many of these risks can be reduced or eliminated by following your surgeon's instructions for pre-operative and post-operative care.

Is SmartLipo right for me?

SmartLipo may be just what you were looking for if you want to get that last bit of problem flab removed. We should note that SmartLipo, just like traditional liposuction, is not meant as a tool for weight loss. SmartLipo is only to be used for aesthetic needs. In fact, we often ask that patients eat healthy and exercise regularly in order to shed as much fat as they can naturally in order to achieve the best possible results from traditional liposuction or SmartLipo.
